Latour, although French by nationality, spent much time in London, where he was a popular arranger of tunes such as this, and a composer of technically undemanding sonatinas. He held the post of official pianist to the Prince Regent.

Several composers, some of considerable international reputation, vied to present amateur musicians with arrangements of Arne's (by now) evergreen classic.
