This edition is offered in the earliest recorded key, for A.T.B.B. It is also available transposed up a fourth for S.A.T.B. for them that will not descend into the pit with Doctor Tye.

This edition has been prepared comparing two printed sources: Barnard (1641) and Boyce (1768). Both (Boyce probably consulted Barnard) split the anthem into two parts: it is offered here in undismembered completeness. It is unascertainable how much of an independent existence the two parts followed. Boyce transposed the piece up a minor third but in applying the C minor key signature created various (inadvertent) accidental changes. These have been corrected where noticed.

The present translator of Psalm 30 remains unidentified, being none of the obvious candidates. It is most likely to be one who held favour with the Edwardian settlement and the Book of Common Prayer of 1549.

Lyrics: Psalm 30, v.1-4, 11-13

I will exalt thee, O Lord, for thou hast defended me, and not suffered mine enemies to have their pleasure upon me.
O Lord my God, I have cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me.
Lord, thou hast brought my soul out of hell, thou hast preserved me from them that descend into the pit.
Sing unto the Lord ye that are his saints, and give thanks with a remembrance of his holiness.
The Lord hath heard me, and hath taken mercy upon me: the Lord is made my helper.
Thou hast turned my sorrow into joy, thou hast put off my sackcloth, and hast compassed me with gladness,
that my glory may sing praise to thee without grief.
O Lord my God, I shall evermore give thanks to thee.
