From Brooks' first set of glees, printed in London and Bath, c.1796.

Lyrics: Anon

Sweet contentment, no resentment,
In our rural cot resides;
Budding roses, fragrant posies,
Such delight with us abides.
With modest look, from nature's book,
Artless, simple, blithe and gay;
Singing, dancing, harmless prancing,
So we pass our time away.

From envy free, so blest are we
Each hour gently glides along;
Sweet entreating, oft repeating,
In the merry dance and song.
Here then retire, with us admire
Rustic scenes so blithe and gay;
Sweet the pleasure, great the treasure,
Come then, pass your time away.

James Brooks
(1760 - 1809)
