From Brooks' second set of glees, printed in London and Bath, c.1798.

Lyrics: Mr Nugent

Ye streams through the valleys that rove,
Ye flowers that spangle the plain,
Ye tribes that inhabit the grove,
For Laura your beauties retain.
Ye woods that surround her, retreat
Should she chance to your coverts to stray;
In whispering murmurs repeat
What I fear in her presence to say.

In vain to the shepherds I fly,
Whose mirth used my spleen to disarm;
Their sports now awaken the sigh,
Their pastimes no longer can charm.
The spring will no pleasure impart,
The sun with no lustre will shine;
No comfort will gladden my heart,
'Til Laura and beauty are mine.

James Brooks
