From a (second) printed collection of glees by members of the Harmonic Society of Cambridge.

The collection was reviewed in approbatory terms by the Monthly Magazine (London), Jan. 1799: '"Death's truest image", by Mr Hague, for five voices, is constructed with great art: the parts flow together with that ease, and produce that happy union of effect, which only ingenuity, and a taste highly cultivated can command.'

Lyrics: Anon

Death's truest image, sorrow's surest friend,
Sleep like a bride on my couch attend.
For oh, what charm thy lenient pow'r applies
To him who dying lives, yet living dies.

Charles Hague
(1769 - 1821)
