From Broderip's "Miscellaneous collection of vocal music" published as his Op. IX.
Lyrics: Anon
Say sleep, that late my eyelids closed,
And lulled each pensive care to rest,
Why now thou leav'st me thus exposed
To woes that rend my tortured breast?
Say, soft deceiver, why alone
Must fortune's fav'rites feel thy pow'r?
Whilst pining grief is left to mourn,
And waste in tears each dreary hour.
Say sleep, that late my eyelids closed,
And lulled each pensive care to rest,
Why now thou leav'st me thus exposed
To woes that rend my tortured breast?
Say, soft deceiver, why alone
Must fortune's fav'rites feel thy pow'r?
Whilst pining grief is left to mourn,
And waste in tears each dreary hour.
