An anthem for Christmas Day. Knapp was a glover and tutor of psalmody in Poole. His "Set of new Psalm Tunes and Anthems" was popular, achieving 8 editions between 1738 and 1770. Knapp's constituency was country (predominantly organless) parishes. The reduction provided with the current edition is best reserved for rehearsal use only.

Lyrics: Isaiah, ch.9, v.6,7

Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:
and the government shall be upon his shoulder.
Alleluia.
And his name shall be called Wonderful, the mighty God,
the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.
Alleluia.
Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end:
upon the throne of David and upon his kingdom to order it,
and to establish it with judgment and justice, from henceforth,
even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of Hosts will perform this.
