Adagio/Allegro - Musette - Minuet

First published in 1744 for the pantomime The Amorous Goddess, or Harlequin Married. This edition follows the version printed in 1763, as one of a set of 6 pantomime overtures.

Oboe parts are absolutely identical to those of the respective violins. Lower reed parts have been provided so that the overture may be played in one of three ways: by strings, with oboe reinforcement; by strings alone; or by reed band.

The musette was popular, and seems to have led an independent life. John Marsh (Journal 10th December, 1778) records the practice of inserting it into the Overture to Boyce's serenata Solomon.
