From Susato's first book of four part chansons, pub. 1543.
Lyrics: Anon
Pour un plaisir qui si peu dure, j'en ai reçu peine et travaux,
J'en ai souffert douleur trop dure, j'en ai reçu cent mille maux,
J'en ai eu de trop grands assauts;
or, Dieu me doit bonne aventure, Fortune a fait sur moi ses sauts.
For so fleeting a pleasure, I have received suffering and travails,
I have suffered grievous sorrow, I have felt a hundred thousand smarts,
I've had too many hard knocks;
but God owes me a fair passage, Fortune has caused me grief.
Pour un plaisir qui si peu dure, j'en ai reçu peine et travaux,
J'en ai souffert douleur trop dure, j'en ai reçu cent mille maux,
J'en ai eu de trop grands assauts;
or, Dieu me doit bonne aventure, Fortune a fait sur moi ses sauts.
For so fleeting a pleasure, I have received suffering and travails,
I have suffered grievous sorrow, I have felt a hundred thousand smarts,
I've had too many hard knocks;
but God owes me a fair passage, Fortune has caused me grief.
