Lyrics: Anon, probably the composer
Beneath the silent rural cell
Of innocence and peace,
With sage retirement let me dwell
And taste each home-felt bliss.
O let me pierce the secret shade
Cheered by the warbling woods,
Or woo the venerable maid
Lulled by the gliding floods.
Then learn, when noon of life is past,
To calmly meet my end,
And feel my setting sun at last
The grave unfeared descend.
Beneath the silent rural cell
Of innocence and peace,
With sage retirement let me dwell
And taste each home-felt bliss.
O let me pierce the secret shade
Cheered by the warbling woods,
Or woo the venerable maid
Lulled by the gliding floods.
Then learn, when noon of life is past,
To calmly meet my end,
And feel my setting sun at last
The grave unfeared descend.
