A serious glee, finished September 25th, 1783.
Lyrics: Anon
Adieu, ye soft scenes of delight,
Which the heart in an ecstasy join'd;
For ever remov'd from my sight,
But for ever impress'd on my mind.
Ye hours that so joyfully flow
Unalloy'd, unattended with pain;
Dear hours, I must bid you adieu,
For I never shall see you again.
But Fancy shall picture the rest,
And the mem'ry too often repair;
To sigh in the spot she was blest,
Sweet Fancy shall soften her care.
She shall bring me the white-colour'd hours,
In carol and pleasure array'd;
She shall dress a gay future with flow'rs,
And the muses shall hallow the shade.
Adieu, ye soft scenes of delight,
Which the heart in an ecstasy join'd;
For ever remov'd from my sight,
But for ever impress'd on my mind.
Ye hours that so joyfully flow
Unalloy'd, unattended with pain;
Dear hours, I must bid you adieu,
For I never shall see you again.
But Fancy shall picture the rest,
And the mem'ry too often repair;
To sigh in the spot she was blest,
Sweet Fancy shall soften her care.
She shall bring me the white-colour'd hours,
In carol and pleasure array'd;
She shall dress a gay future with flow'rs,
And the muses shall hallow the shade.
